Local Happenings and New Openings
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s new “Bus, Club” initiative is encouraging New Yorkers to use public transportation for a night out rather than spending $50+ on a rideshare to get home. Kicking off with the B44, the initiative highlights nightlife spots along the route and encourages riders to “Have fun, get home safe, save money.” This initiative is part of a larger $882 million, five-year investment in NYC’s bus system aimed at making service faster and improving priority routes across the city. The B44 runs right through Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights along Nostrand Ave. We made a Google Map Guide for spots along the route, and the full list can also be found here.
Bottega Social Club shared with us that they’re expanding with two new spaces, starting with a new location in Crown Heights opening just after Labor Day. Next door to the existing Bottega Café & Bakery, Bottega Bakery, Books & Market will offer a little more room to shop, eat and hang out.
Next, they’ll land in Fort Greene with a more compact, mostly grab-and-go location at 157 Washington Park, right along Fort Greene Park. Expect sandwiches, coffee, pastries, focaccia, gelato, juices, beer and spritzes to go, with the park serving as the ultimate patio when the new spot opens next spring.
📸: Bottega The Great PUPkin is just two months away from taking over Fort Greene Park with Brooklyn’s biggest and oldest dog costume contest! They’re looking for volunteers to help bring the event to life, as well as sponsors who want to get involved and support the annual neighborhood favorite. Registration to enter opens on September 21st with the event taking place Saturday, October 24, with Sunday. October 25 as the rain date.
Russ & Daughters is teaming up with West Elm on a new holiday collection, bringing the iconic New York shop’s signature style into the home. The collection includes dinnerware, trays, linens, decorative pieces, entertaining essentials and a menorah inspired by Jewish traditions and the rituals of gathering. With Russ & Daughters’ 18,000 sq. ft base of operations and public Jewish bakery right here in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, it’s especially fun to see this local fixture make its way onto holiday tables beyond the neighborhood.
📸: Russ & Daughters Empanada Loca is now open in Albee Square, bringing freshly fried empanadas to Downtown Brooklyn. They’re serving them hot alongside Mexican sodas, making for an easy grab-and-go bite while you’re out and about. They’re keeping things simple as they get settled in, with a full menu still to come.
The team behind Fort Greene’s Strange Delight is opening a new bar and grill called Triangle at 87 S Elliott Pl. Located in Fowler Square, the new spot will be a small, cozy space with 24 seats at tables and seven at the bar. It’s expected to be open from noon to midnight daily. They are currently slated to open this fall/winter and have promised to serve Guinness 👀.
Anya Yoga is officially open at 900 Fulton St., founded by Tochi Anueyiagu, with a full class schedule spanning yoga, Pilates and sound baths. Their offerings range from Kundalini to Sculpt, giving you plenty of options depending on what kind of movement or reset you’re looking for.
Olivino Wines is back at 905 Fulton St. after their lengthy renovation. The longtime neighborhood wine shop has a fresh new look, with owner Katrine back behind the counter and ready to welcome everyone in.

Vinyl Nights (5pm – 8pm): Come together in Albee Square for a night of dancing, with DJ Money Mike and Raw Q bringing the sounds of disco, funk, soul and house to Downtown Brooklyn.
Muddy Waters Comedy (7pm – 10pm): Live stand-up at Commune Cafe + Wine Bar, with host Jim Search and a lineup of five very funny comedians. It’s a laid-back neighborhood comedy night with drinks, food and plenty of laughs. Tickets will be available at the door.
Friday, August 28:
Los Burritos Juárez Collaboration (12pm – sold out): Los Burritos Juárez is teaming up with James Beard Award-winning chef and cookbook author Rick Martínez for a special collaboration. The menu features a Taco Gobernador, Burrito de Langosta and Torta de Lechón. We suggest going early!
Sturgeon Full Moon Walk (7pm–8:30pm): Celebrate the August Sturgeon Moon with a full moon neighborhood walk through Fort Greene, starting with a meet-up at Soulmate, tarot cards and a stroll through the moonlight.
Saturday, August 29:
Rhodora Block Party (all day): They’ll be taking over Willoughby and Adelphi all day Saturday for a street party with dancing and one last celebration of summer.
Spike Lee’s Annual BK Loves MJ Block Party (12pm – 7pm): Returning for a seven-hour celebration and longstanding Brooklyn tradition honoring Michael Jackson’s birthday, with a full lineup of DJs spinning his biggest hits. The free outdoor event in Fort Greene Park will bring the neighborhood together for a day of music, dancing and community.
Know Your Neighbor (3pm–6pm): Clinton Hill Fort Greene Mutual Aid is hosting a community gathering at Greene Garden, bringing neighbors together to connect, share food, and build local networks of support. The whole family is welcome, and guests are encouraged to bring something to share.
Sunday, August 30:
The LOIRE valley @ Entre Nous (3pm): A five wine tasting led by James Sligh of The Children’s Atlas of Wine, covering everything from Chenin and Cabernet Franc to lesser-known grapes like Romorantin and Pineau d’Aunis. This is a ticketed event.
Thursday, September 3:
Brooklyn Grange at the Navy Yard (3pm – 7:45pm): Outstanding in the Field is making its annual stop at Brooklyn Navy Yard, and it’s the series’ only NYC stop of the year. The rooftop dinner will feature guest chef Mavis-Jay Sanders, wine from Usonia Wine and beer from Other Half Brewing, all with stunning Manhattan skyline views. Tickets are likely to sell out.
