Two Fort Greene favorites are getting creative with their food scraps for NYC’s third annual Make Food Not Waste Restaurant Week, running September 28–October 4. Strange Delight and Rhodora are both participating in the weeklong initiative from Mill, the food waste company behind a kitchen bin that grinds and dehydrates food scraps overnight, keeping them out of the landfill and turning them into clean, dry grounds.
Strange Delight is turning leftover leeks into a Leeks Vinaigrette, using fish stock made from scraps and bones and topping it with littleneck clam conserva. Over at Rhodora, the Leafy Green Salad will come with pickled radish greens and a citrus vinaigrette made with juice from oranges and lemon peels already used at the bar, plus a special zero-waste cocktail for the week. It’s a creative way for both restaurants to put ingredients that might normally get tossed back on the menu.
Dear Friend Books & Bar will be closing its doors at the end of the month after more than four years in the neighborhood as we reported earlier this month. Since opening in June 2022, the space has become a gathering place for the community, hosting countless events and giving people a place to celebrate, share their work and connect around books and stories. The owner shared that rising costs and a difficult winter made the business unsustainable, while the building is also going up for sale this summer. It’s a bittersweet end to a space that clearly meant a lot to the people who passed through its doors, with the owner planning to carry the spirit of Dear Friend forward through a new small publishing project.
You can catch them one last time at their Closing Celebration on Sept 25 - Sept 27 where they’ll have a range of events from portraits, movie features, and DJ dance parties. Everything across the weekend will be free or donation based.
Dynaco is back open on Bedford Ave. after an almost nine-month closure following a fire in the residential floors above the bar that caused significant damage throughout the building. The team spent the past several months rebuilding and fundraising for repairs, and now the cozy neighborhood favorite is back with its cocktails, fireplace and cash-only policy.
📸: @dynaco_bar Place des Fêtes is kicking off its fall wine classes, with guided tastings running on select Sundays through September, October and November. The series starts September 27 with a class focused on wines from the Loire Valley, followed by sessions on Blanc de Noir, Riesling from around the world and Austrian wines. It’s less wine school, more drinking, snacks and learning with the bar’s sommeliers. All tickets are available through Resy.
Fan-Fan Doughnuts and La Newyorkina are bringing back their “Disloyalty Club” for Hispanic Heritage Month, encouraging people to support Hispanic-owned small businesses around the city. Spend $20 or more at a Hispanic-owned business or street stand, send over your receipt, and you’ll earn free goodies from the two local businesses.
Peral in Bed-Stuy, which only opened September 2, has already landed on two hit lists!

The neighborhood spot serves breakfast burritos, coffee and pastries during the day before switching to tacos and cocktails at night, with the chicken milanesa taco getting a particular shoutout.
DoorDash has reached a $131.5 million settlement with New York City over delivery worker pay violations dating back to 2023. The company says more than 200,000 NYC Dashers were underpaid or paid late under the city’s delivery worker pay rules, and that every impacted worker will receive the amount they are owed and be contacted directly with payment details.

Thursday, September 24:
Big Freaking Mezcal Party (5 – 9pm): Casanara is teaming up with Mal Bien for a night of mezcal specials and free tattoos from Deloach Tattoo. Mezcal specials will run throughout the week leading up to the party.
Friday, September 25:
The Fling (6:30pm): Fort Greene Park Conservancy is celebrating its 25th anniversary with its annual park party, featuring live music from Saint James Joy and Brooklyn Music School’s jazz ensemble. The 21+ event is BYO picnic and BYOB, with a rain date of September 26.
Tickets are available here and are likely to sell out.
AQUA COSMOS: The Hudson Canyon (7pm–10pm): The Brooklyn Bridge will become an underwater world through an 18-minute immersive projection featuring deep-sea footage, ocean imagery and whale sounds. The free, walk-up experience takes place at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Friday, September 25 – Sunday, September 27:
Not A Normal Fall Show (times are ticket dependent): For its second weekend, One Hanson Place is hosting this fall shopping event across the weekend, bringing together vendors offering everything from home goods and decor to art, apparel, accessories, and beauty and wellness. The market will feature a mix of independent and design-focused brands, with an emphasis on handmade, vintage, sustainable and locally-sourced goods.
Saturday, September 26:
KJH x Sixteen Mill 3rd Birthday (10am–1pm): KJH Brand is celebrating its birthday at Sixteen Mill with free Soft Smudge Lip & Cheek Sticks with every purchase, while supplies last. Grab a coffee and gluten-free treat while playing with makeup with Katie Jane Hughes.
Sunday, September 27:
Atlantic Antic (12pm–6pm): Brooklyn’s oldest and largest street festival returns to Atlantic Avenue, with food, crafts, music and family-friendly activities stretching from Hicks Street to 4th Avenue. The festival is rain or shine so bring an umbrella☂️.
Tuesday, September 29:
Sara Bennett Discusses Looking Inside: Women with Life Sentences (6:30pm–8pm): Photographer and former public defender Sara Bennett discusses her new book, which documents women serving life sentences and their lives inside prison and after release. Three women featured in the book will join her for the conversation at Central Library’s Dweck Center.

Central Brooklyn Job Fair (10am–2pm): The Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch is hosting a job fair with opportunities and resources spanning healthcare, civil service, seasonal work, transportation and pre-workforce training.
