• Open House New York Weekend is back October 16–18, giving New Yorkers access to 300+ spaces across all five boroughs otherwise closed to the public, from historic buildings and architectural gems to behind-the-scenes tours. There are a handful of drop-in experiences right here in Clinton Hill & Fort Greene this weekend:

  It’s a great excuse to explore one of the neighborhood’s most fascinating spaces, so check the full lineup for more nearby finds and plan your weekend.

• A little Fort Greene brag! Our very own Sailor landed at #7 on The Infatuation’s list of the 25 Best Restaurants in NYC. The neighborhood favorite is getting some well-deserved love, and we can personally attest to having some of the best times there – their French toast on the brunch menu is truly special and the Caesar salad is easily in my all-time top five.

• Green in BKLYN is partnering with Green Gooding, marking the rental service’s eighth location and bringing appliance rentals to Clinton Hill and Fort Greene residents. The Myrtle Avenue shop is now offering portable carpet and upholstery cleaners for rent, giving locals an easy way to freshen up their rugs without buying a new machine. You can book online or stop by the shop to say hello to Elissa.

• To celebrate its publication day on October 13, the Daily Dessert book tour is teaming up with some of Brooklyn’s favorite bakeries for a week of sweet collaborations. Breads Bakery, Thea Bakery, The Good Batch and Fan-Fan Doughnuts are all getting in on the fun with special treats to track down throughout the week. The crawl runs through October 18, so you still have time to make the rounds and try one of everything!

  

• Burlington, the off-price retailer known for discounted name-brand clothing, shoes and home goods, is opening a new store at 25 Navy Street in the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Admirals Row development. The 31,717-square-foot space will offer everything from apparel and accessories to toys and home essentials. An opening is planned for fall 2027, though an exact date hasn’t been announced yet.

• After four years in Clinton Hill, Sweetbee is saying goodbye to its Fulton Street location and moving on to its next chapter in Prospect Heights. The team shared a thank-you note on their door to the neighborhood for all the love and support over the years, but the good news is they’re not gone for good as you can still get your Sweetbee fix at 643 Dean Street in Prospect Heights.

• Little Bagel NYC is bringing pumpkin-shaped bagels to the Fort Greene Farmers Market, and they’re almost too cute to eat. They’re not pumpkin-flavored, just shaped like little pumpkins, and you can get them with a range of spreads and sandwich fillings.

• Saint James Joy’s Beats for Treats is collecting unopened bags of candy ahead of their October 24 event for neighborhood kids. The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is teaming up with the organizers to provide a drop-off location and contribute candy of its own. Donations can be dropped off at 472 Myrtle Ave, 2nd floor, from today through to Friday, October 23, from 10am – 5pm.

There’s a lot of excitement coming this fall and lots of festive sweet treats to try. I have my eye on that monkey bread!

Greenlight Bookstore’s 17th Birthday Merch Drop: Greenlight is celebrating its 17th birthday with a new tote bag featuring drawings of beloved local dogs by some of its favorite children’s book illustrators. The bags will be available in-store starting October 24, and all preorders benefit Fort Greene PUPS, the team behind the annual Great PUPkin dog costume contest, also happening that day.

Stankface’s Chamber of Horrors (8pm+): Bordello, tucked beneath Putnam’s Pub in Fort Greene, is hosting a Halloween-themed night of comedy, live music, tarot readings, magic and more. Hosted by Simon U, the show features stand-up from several comedians, plus music by Alberto Reyes and plenty of spooky surprises.

Libra Season at Sisters (9pm – 1am): Sisters is celebrating Libra season with a party featuring an open-format DJ set by Chenakova. Libras can submit song requests, so come celebrate your birthday season or show some love to your favorite Libras.

Where to go when they’re hungry…

Okay well this was a wild one to start off with because it’s so nuanced and there are a billion great places to eat.

Hungry for something casual:

1. Chef Katsu

A great casual spot that has never let me down. Order some fries to share with curry sauce to dip, and don’t skip their seasonal sweet treat.

2. Los Burritos Juarez

I promise you they’ll be talking about these burritos for months. They don’t have a lot of indoor seating but Fort Greene Park is only a couple of blocks away.

3. The Fly

Who doesn’t love a roast chicken? Especially when roast chickens in NYC have been quite the topic of conversation lately (IYKYK). The sauces here are so special, and their rotating specials have never steered me wrong.
Feel free to bring them to Hartley’s while you’re near and flex about it being listed as one of NYC’s greatest Guinnesses.

Hungry for something a little more vibey:

1. Place des Fêtes

There’s always something special on the chalkboard, but don’t miss out on the bangs island mussels en tinta or the crispy maitake mushroom with black garlic fudge. The obvious choice would be to grab a pre/post dinner drink at their sister bar Golden Ratio, or you could venture across the street to Bar Laika where they have a pickle martini they won’t forget.

• A Clinton Hill townhouse just set a new neighborhood record, selling for $9.4 million. The 25-foot-wide, 7,000-square-foot home at 374 Washington Ave. was sold off-market after a major renovation, with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, original details and a decked-out garden with an outdoor bar. It last sold for $3.75 million in 2014, making this a pretty serious jump in 12 years. The house is one of the neighborhood’s grandest, as sale just barely edged out the Pfizer Mansion at 280 Washington Ave., which sold for $9.1 million in 2021, to claim this record.

  

• Brooklyn is getting one of the country’s only middle schools specifically designed for LGBTQ+ students and their allies, which was first reported by Hell Gate. Miss Major Middle is set to open in Fort Greene in 2027 as a tuition-free school, starting with sixth grade before adding seventh and eighth grades in 2028 and 2029. The school is being founded by former math teacher Joji Florence, who has spent the past decade developing the idea around creating a more supportive environment for queer and trans students. Classes will take place in a small Fort Greene space, with the school also using nearby parks and the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of its curriculum.

• The Brooklyn Curry Project has found a permanent home! After starting with just five lunch boxes and dosas at the Fort Greene farmers market in 2021, the business has spent the past two years searching for a space and has now landed at 383 Bridge St. in Downtown Brooklyn. Interior work is already underway, with more details on the new location to come soon.

• The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music is celebrating the opening of its new campus with a musical parade through Park Slope. Dozens of BKCM ensembles will provide the soundtrack as the parade makes its way down 7th Ave. and up President St., ending at the new campus at 963 President St. Afterward, you can tour the new space, which has 13 music studios, a performance hall and community space.

  • When: Sunday, October 11, 10am – 12pm (this weekend)

  • Where: Starts at 58 7th Ave. and ends at 963 President St.

• A lawn update from Fort Greene Park: a few areas will be closed this fall for reseeding, while others will have temporary usage changes to give the grass and soil time to recover. See the park’s lawn map here for a visual of which areas are open, closed, and on- or off-leash.

  • South Monument Lawn: Closed October 9

  • West Lawn: Closed October 15

  • Off-leash: Myrtle Lawn + south half of Central Lawn, before 9am and after 9pm

Local Happenings and New Openings

• This corner of Malcolm X Boulevard and Macon Street is finally getting some attention as the Brooklyn Paper shared updates on its revamp. The long-vacant building at 265 Malcolm X has undergone a gut renovation, bringing its seven apartments and ground-floor commercial space back into use, with Cosmo, the newly beloved children’s store, already calling the corner home. Cosmo has also been popping up at other spots around the neighborhood, so it’s nice to see their store getting the attention they deserve. There’s even more change coming next door, with plans for a new four-story, 10-unit building.

  

• A little seasonal PSA: Biddrina Gelato cart outside of Locanda Vini e Olii is only around for a few more days, closing for the season (not forever) on Saturday, October 3. I’m personally very sad about this one because it’s one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood, so I’ll be making the most of the remaining scoops.

• The Brownstone Detectives shared a look at 100 years of 197 Quincy St., comparing the property in 2023, 2019 and 1919. It’s a pretty dramatic before and after, with the old building now gone and a modern apartment building in its place.

  

• Haiti Cultural Exchange’s Mizik Ayiti! Residency is back this fall, with Brooklyn-based Haitian American drummer and bandleader Gashford Guillaume leading the series. The residency brings together rotating guest musicians for weekly performances blending Haitian music with jazz, soul, R&B and other global sounds. The remaining Thursday performances are October 1 (tonight!) , 8, 15 and 22, with sets at 6:30pm and 7:45pm. The series is designed as a space for musicians to workshop new arrangements and ideas in front of a live audience. Tickets are a $10 suggested donation and include a complimentary beverage, with pop-up offerings from Bon Pâtés.

• Two Fort Greene favorites are getting creative with their food scraps for NYC’s third annual Make Food Not Waste Restaurant Week, running September 28–October 4. Strange Delight and Rhodora are both participating in the weeklong initiative from Mill, the food waste company behind a kitchen bin that grinds and dehydrates food scraps overnight, keeping them out of the landfill and turning them into clean, dry grounds.

  Strange Delight is turning leftover leeks into a Leeks Vinaigrette, using fish stock made from scraps and bones and topping it with littleneck clam conserva. Over at Rhodora, the Leafy Green Salad will come with pickled radish greens and a citrus vinaigrette made with juice from oranges and lemon peels already used at the bar. It’s a creative way for both restaurants to put ingredients that might normally get tossed back on the menu.

  

• Dear Friend Books & Bar will be closing its doors at the end of the month after more than four years in the neighborhood as we reported earlier this month. Since opening in June 2022, the space has become a gathering place for the community, hosting countless events and giving people a place to celebrate, share their work and connect around books and stories. The owner shared that rising costs and a difficult winter made the business unsustainable, while the building is also going up for sale this summer. It’s a bittersweet end to a space that clearly meant a lot to the people who passed through its doors, with the owner planning to carry the spirit of Dear Friend forward through a new small publishing project.

  You can catch them one last time at their Closing Celebration on Sept 25 - Sept 27 where they’ll have a range of events from portraits, movie features, and DJ dance parties. Everything across the weekend will be free or donation based.

• Dynaco is back open on Bedford Ave. after an almost nine-month closure following a fire in the residential floors above the bar that caused significant damage throughout the building. The team spent the past several months rebuilding and fundraising for repairs, and now the cozy neighborhood favorite is back with its cocktails, fireplace and cash-only policy.

  

• Place des Fêtes is kicking off its fall wine classes, with guided tastings running on select Sundays through September, October and November. The series starts September 27 with a class focused on wines from the Loire Valley, followed by sessions on Blanc de Noir, Riesling from around the world and Austrian wines. It’s less wine school, more drinking, snacks and learning with the bar’s sommeliers. All tickets are available through Resy.

• Fan-Fan Doughnuts and La Newyorkina are bringing back their “Disloyalty Club” for Hispanic Heritage Month, encouraging people to support Hispanic-owned small businesses around the city. Spend $20 or more at a Hispanic-owned business or street stand, send over your receipt, and you’ll earn free goodies from the two local businesses.

• Peral in Bed-Stuy, which only opened September 2, has already landed on two hit lists!

  • The Infatuation’s latest “The Hit List: New NYC Restaurants to Try Right Now”

  • The NYT’s “18 Restaurants (and a Few Trends) We’re Excited About This Fall”

  The neighborhood spot serves breakfast burritos, coffee and pastries during the day before switching to tacos and cocktails at night, with the chicken milanesa taco getting a particular shoutout.

• DoorDash has reached a $131.5 million settlement with New York City over delivery worker pay violations dating back to 2023. The company says more than 200,000 NYC Dashers were underpaid or paid late under the city’s delivery worker pay rules, and that every impacted worker will receive the amount they are owed and be contacted directly with payment details.

AQUA COSMOS: The Hudson Canyon (7pm–10pm): The Brooklyn Bridge will become an underwater world through an 18-minute immersive projection featuring deep-sea footage, ocean imagery and whale sounds. The free, walk-up experience takes place at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Not A Normal Fall Show (times are ticket dependent): For its second weekend, One Hanson Place is hosting this fall shopping event across the weekend, bringing together vendors offering everything from home goods and decor to art, apparel, accessories, and beauty and wellness. The market will feature a mix of independent and design-focused brands, with an emphasis on handmade, vintage, sustainable and locally-sourced goods.

Saturday, September 26:

KJH x Sixteen Mill 3rd Birthday (10am–1pm): KJH Brand is celebrating its birthday at Sixteen Mill with free Soft Smudge Lip & Cheek Sticks with every purchase, while supplies last. Grab a coffee and gluten-free treat while playing with makeup with Katie Jane Hughes.

Sunday, September 27:

Atlantic Antic (12pm–6pm): Brooklyn’s oldest and largest street festival returns to Atlantic Avenue, with food, crafts, music and family-friendly activities stretching from Hicks Street to 4th Avenue. The festival is rain or shine so bring an umbrella☂️.

Sara Bennett Discusses Looking Inside: Women with Life Sentences (6:30pm–8pm): Photographer and former public defender Sara Bennett discusses her new book, which documents women serving life sentences and their lives inside prison and after release. Three women featured in the book will join her for the conversation at Central Library’s Dweck Center.

Local Happenings and New Openings

• Million Goods, the very chic menswear shop and wine bar, has officially opened on DeKalb Ave., bringing its Greenpoint cool-kid following to the neighborhood. Their tagline is “come early, stay late,” and with a moody lounge and long bar downstairs, a brighter retail floor upstairs and what looks like a backyard, there seems to be plenty of reason to do just that. Natural wine is served alongside the retail shop, which features a mix of menswear and denim.

  

• The Great PUPkin costume contest registration opens soon, and if previous years are any indication, you won’t want to wait. There are two registration tiers:

  • Early Howl ($30): 10 am, September 21–October 5 (or until sold out)

  • Full Moon ($35): 10am, October 5–14 (or until sold out)

    Registration is only required for dogs entering the costume contest, so spectators can attend for free. There will be no day-of registration, and the event sells out every year, so set your alarm, get the costume ready and grab a spot early.

• Love Child Yoga is opening its second location above Margot on Lafayette Ave., bringing prenatal and postnatal classes, Baby & Me yoga, and strength training to Fort Greene. Founded by Neelu, a Certified Nurse-Midwife, Registered Nurse, Full-Spectrum Doula, Childbirth Educator and yoga expert, the studio has been based in the West Village since 2015. Neelu originally worked as an architect before leaving the field to focus on maternal care, later earning a Master’s in midwifery and building Love Child around supporting people through fertility, pregnancy and postpartum.

• Lula Mae on Myrtle Ave. has officially made the switch from Cambodian restaurant to sports bar. The restaurant announced earlier this year that they would stop serving Cambodian food after chef Ranna Thou left New York to travel the world, saying it wouldn’t feel right to continue the cuisine without her at the helm. Now, the menu is all about burgers, wings and other bar fare, with one familiar favorite sticking around: the Cambodian dry-rub fried chicken. They’re also offering free meals for kids, making the rebrand a little more family-friendly.

  

• Myrtle Avenue Touch A Truck returns to Clinton Hill on Saturday, September 19 for a free day of big trucks, working vehicles and plenty of hands-on fun. Families can climb aboard, explore the vehicles, pick up a free book, enjoy face painting and balloon twisting, get slimed with the NYC Ghostbusters and more. The event will take place from 10am to 2pm on Clinton Avenue between Myrtle and DeKalb.

• Vendor applications are still open for an upcoming market at One Hanson Place in Brooklyn, with spots available for furniture, home goods and decor, art, apparel, accessories, and beauty and wellness brands. The organizers are especially looking for vendors focused on local or responsible sourcing, handmade quality goods, vintage, sustainability, and community. The market will take place over two weekends, September 18–20 (this weekend) and September 25–27.

• Alts Tailors, Vogue’s “Most Genius Tailor,” has teased a new location that would make it their fifth Brooklyn studio. They haven’t shared the address yet, but from the teaser, it looks like Fort Greene Park to us 👀. Alts specializes in precision alterations and tailoring, from everyday clothing and formalwear to bridal and more, with a focus on expert craftsmanship and a more elevated, client-first experience.

With all of these new things popping up, I’ll be taking a page out of Million Goods’s book by going out early and staying out late ;)

Sign-ups are first come, first served, followed by a raffle for half-hour sets throughout the rest of the night. Bring your own headphones, and there’s a one-drink minimum to sign up.

Nicholas Daley Takeover (6pm – 9pm): The new Fort Greene Million Goods location is hosting the launch of an exclusive ND x Theo Croker Blue Note Jazz Club T-shirt. A selection of the newly-released AW26 Rebel Riot collection will also be available, with Theo Croker and K.Tea DJing throughout the evening. Expect a mix of jazz, soul and spiritual sounds.

Filipino x Creole Pop-Up (4pm+): Frog Wine Bar is hosting chefs blending Filipino flavors with a Creole twist, with dishes like étouffée munggo, lechon kawali and lumpiang andouille on the menu. There will also be vegan options, plus ube bread pudding and biko for something sweet.

It Takes a Village (11am – 6pm): Los Amigos Community Garden is hosting an afternoon of art, spoken word and live music, with creative workshops and activities for all ages. The free event is centered around making art and green space accessible to the community, with performances and hands-on activities throughout the day.

Bazaar NYC x Gotcha Focaccia (9am until sold out): Gotcha’s Pop-Up Focacceria is partnering with Nirupa Konijeti of Bazaar NYC on two limited-edition focaccia flavors inspired by her supper club menus and late-summer produce. Choose from Tomato Chutney topped with labneh and chili crisp, or Brown Butter Corn with whipped goat cheese and roasted shishito peppers. Mind Your Hem (6pm – 9pm): Playground is hosting a beginner-friendly sewing workshop where participants can learn how to hand-sew and hem a favorite shirt or pair of pants. Bring one clothing item to work on and learn how to calculate the right length, trim, press and stitch your new hem. The workshop is led by fiber artist Mads Davis and costs $40.

September 21 – September 27:

Negroni Week: Ten bars and restaurants along Myrtle Avenue are participating in Negroni Week, each offering a special Negroni menu with classic versions and creative twists on the cocktail. Participating spots include The Emerson, Lula Mae, Putnam’s Pub, Rosticceria Evelina, Little Falcon and more. Local Happenings and New Openings

• The very distinctive modernist townhouse on Greene Ave. and Classon Ave. has officially sold, as reported by Curbed. The two-family home, known for its white stucco, glass facade and very orange doors, went for $3.85 million after originally asking $5.2 million. The house was also known for its guerrilla “New York City Housing Crisis” plaque. If that doesn’t ring a bell, the townhouse became a highly coveted spot for Knicks watch parties, with a projector set up across the street. Its new owner, a family from the suburbs, plans to turn it into a single-family home and apparently told the broker, “I’m never going to sell this house.”

  

  

• Apt. 2 Bread is becoming Boots Bread, a new brick-and-mortar bakery planned for Crown Heights by bakers Carla Finley and Megan Wang of Graindead Bread. Carla, a Clinton Hill local, previously worked at She Wolf Bakery — based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard — before starting Apt. 2 Bread out of her apartment in 2020. The pair is currently raising funds to open the takeaway bakery, with the Kickstarter now live for anyone who wants to help bring the new spot to life.

  

• Speaking of Kickstarter… As of August 23rd Well Nice bar has successfully funded their goal to move from the Hudson Valley to Bed-Stuy!

• And the fun doesn’t stop there — Peral, a new CDMX-style taqueria, just opened in Bed-Stuy yesterday, September 2nd. From the teams behind Mexico City’s Cicatriz and Brooklyn’s Olmo, Peral is serving up tacos, guisados, and house-made corn tortillas in a “love letter to Mexico City.”

• Fulton Street is about to get a wave of new bars and cafés, with Capiz, LaObra Cafe, and Night Cactus all recently filing for liquor licenses. Capiz is set to take over the former Oma Grassa space as a Filipino restaurant, while we’ve seen LaObra Cafe share some of their journey along the way. Night Cactus remains a bit of a mystery for now, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more 👀

• Strange Delight is putting a charitable spin on one of its menu favorites this September, donating $5 from every Fried Green Tomato Po’Boy to Food Bank For NYC for Hunger Action Month. The sandwich is available all month so you can grab lunch while giving back.

• Are you nostalgic for the days of snail mail? Notes To Neighbors is now at Prima in Clinton Hill! Sign up here to be matched with a pen pal in the neighborhood from September 27th through January 3rd. The Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival (3-7pm): Founded in 2010 by musician Eric Frazier, the Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival returns to bring soulful sounds to the neighborhood park! This event is free and open to the public — no RSVP needed. Plan to bring a yoga mat or foldable chair for seating!

Local Happenings and New Openings

• Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s new “Bus, Club” initiative is encouraging New Yorkers to use public transportation for a night out rather than spending $50+ on a rideshare to get home. Kicking off with the B44, the initiative highlights nightlife spots along the route and encourages riders to “Have fun, get home safe, save money.” This initiative is part of a larger $882 million, five-year investment in NYC’s bus system aimed at making service faster and improving priority routes across the city. The B44 runs right through Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights along Nostrand Ave. We made a Google Map Guide for spots along the route, and the full list can also be found here.

  

• Bottega Social Club shared with us that they’re expanding with two new spaces, starting with a new location in Crown Heights opening just after Labor Day. Next door to the existing Bottega Café & Bakery, Bottega Bakery, Books & Market will offer a little more room to shop, eat and hang out.

  Next, they’ll land in Fort Greene with a more compact, mostly grab-and-go location at 157 Washington Park, right along Fort Greene Park. Expect sandwiches, coffee, pastries, focaccia, gelato, juices, beer and spritzes to go, with the park serving as the ultimate patio when the new spot opens next spring.

• The Great PUPkin is just two months away from taking over Fort Greene Park with Brooklyn’s biggest and oldest dog costume contest! They’re looking for volunteers to help bring the event to life, as well as sponsors who want to get involved and support the annual neighborhood favorite. Registration to enter opens on September 21st with the event taking place Saturday, October 24, with Sunday. October 25 as the rain date.

• Russ & Daughters is teaming up with West Elm on a new holiday collection, bringing the iconic New York shop’s signature style into the home. The collection includes dinnerware, trays, linens, decorative pieces, entertaining essentials and a menorah inspired by Jewish traditions and the rituals of gathering. With Russ & Daughters’ 18,000 sq. ft base of operations and public Jewish bakery right here in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, it’s especially fun to see this local fixture make its way onto holiday tables beyond the neighborhood.

• Empanada Loca is now open in Albee Square, bringing freshly fried empanadas to Downtown Brooklyn. They’re serving them hot alongside Mexican sodas, making for an easy grab-and-go bite while you’re out and about. They’re keeping things simple as they get settled in, with a full menu still to come.

• The team behind Fort Greene’s Strange Delight is opening a new bar and grill called Triangle at 87 S Elliott Pl. Located in Fowler Square, the new spot will be a small, cozy space with 24 seats at tables and seven at the bar. It’s expected to be open from noon to midnight daily. They are currently slated to open this fall/winter and have promised to serve Guinness 👀.

• Anya Yoga is officially open at 900 Fulton St., founded by Tochi Anueyiagu, with a full class schedule spanning yoga, Pilates and sound baths. Their offerings range from Kundalini to Sculpt, giving you plenty of options depending on what kind of movement or reset you’re looking for.

• Olivino Wines is back at 905 Fulton St. after their lengthy renovation. The longtime neighborhood wine shop has a fresh new look, with owner Katrine back behind the counter and ready to welcome everyone in.

Spike Lee’s Annual BK Loves MJ Block Party (12pm – 7pm): Returning for a seven-hour celebration and longstanding Brooklyn tradition honoring Michael Jackson’s birthday, with a full lineup of DJs spinning his biggest hits. The free outdoor event in Fort Greene Park will bring the neighborhood together for a day of music, dancing and community.

Brooklyn Grange at the Navy Yard (3pm – 7:45pm): Outstanding in the Field is making its annual stop at Brooklyn Navy Yard, and it’s the series’ only NYC stop of the year. Local Happenings and New Openings

• Travel + Leisure just profiled Anthony Ramos and his Bed-Stuy bar, Milly’s, sharing the story behind the Brooklyn native’s first venture into hospitality. The piece dives into how Ramos teamed up with longtime friend Ron Leakey to open the bar, which is named after his mother, Mildred, and has become a neighborhood spot for Caribbean-inspired bites, craft cocktails, and weekend DJs. Ramos describes the vision as creating “a space that almost felt like you were in someone’s brownstone” – relaxed and unpretentious, but still special. • Outdoor dining in NYC is officially sticking around year-round, meaning your favorite sidewalk and roadway setups can now stay open through the winter. Restaurants will be able to apply for permits starting in September, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for which spots around the neighborhood take advantage of the new rules.

• CHiPS, the longtime Brooklyn nonprofit providing food pantry services, community meals, and transitional housing, has expanded into the Brooklyn Navy Yard as demand for food assistance continues to grow. The organization recently moved its pantry operations into a roughly 4,000 sqft warehouse in the Navy Yard, its first physical expansion since it was founded in 1971. The new space is expected to more than double the number of households CHiPS can serve each week, while its hot meal program will remain at its Fourth Ave. location.

  

• Spike Lee is teaming up with BAM for a brand-new two-day festival celebrating all things Brooklyn. Coming this November, the festival will bring together film screenings, conversations with cultural icons, live performances, pop-ups, and a free street fair with local food and music, including a special screening of Crooklyn. Spike is clearly keeping busy creating ways to celebrate his hometown, with his annual Michael Jackson block party also coming up next week.

• Green in Brooklyn is hosting a Tiny Art Gallery featuring small, handmade works from local artists, and they’re currently taking submissions to be part of the opening day lineup in September. The gallery will be set up outside the shop for 1–2 weeks, where anyone can open the door, take a tiny piece of art home for free, or leave a small handmade creation for someone else to discover.

Sunday Asado at Colonia Verde (5pm–8pm): Chef Anthony Verastegui of North Miami Beach’s Barra Callao is bringing his Peruvian Nikkei cooking to the Colonia Verde garden, with a menu centered around fresh seafood, ceviches, and dishes that combine Japanese technique with the bold flavors of Peru. Verastegui runs the intimate 12-seat chef’s counter, which was recently recognized with a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand. The evening will also feature NAMI, the first Mexican sake, for a cross-cultural pairing of Peruvian, Japanese, and Mexican flavors. Book through Resy.

Local Happenings and New Openings

• Peral, a new all-day taqueria and cafe is coming to Bed-Stuy on Saratoga Ave. from the teams behind Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized Olmo and Cicatriz in CDMX. The menu serves mostly tacos and drinks but will also be a cafe in the mornings. They’re soft opening this week – dates and details are the end of the newsletter.

• Downtown Brooklyn is getting some new stores including Japanese lifestyle retailer MUJI and Park Slope-based bakery and café Winner, both opening at the Alloy Block on Flatbush Avenue. MUJI will be the retailer’s second Brooklyn location, while Winner will bring its sourdough, pastries, coffee, led by Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Daniel Eddy. We also spotted signage for Gap at Atlantic Terminal, so it looks like there’s plenty of new retail on the way.

  

• Classon Convenience has officially opened at the Classon G, taking over the space that was previously home to a Chinese take-out. It’s a pretty busy corner these days with the station getting an accessibility upgrade, so this new addition should settle in well.

  

• Plans have been filed for a new eight-story mixed-use building at 475 Myrtle Ave in Clinton Hill, between Hall St and Washington Ave. The proposed building would have 30 residential units, commercial space on the ground floor, rooftop terraces, and four parking spots. No word yet on when construction will begin, but we’ll keep an eye on it.

• The Brooklyn Navy Yard is now accepting vendor applications for its 9th Annual Holiday Market, welcoming entrepreneurs and small businesses to sell products, promote their brands, or create an interactive installation. Applications are open through September 27, so you can apply here.

• The 16th Annual NYC Pizza Run is coming to Fort Greene Park on September 27, where runners complete a 5K while stopping for slices of pizza along the route. As tickets usually sell out in minutes, they’re doing two drops this year with a limited number of discounted pre-sale tickets going on sale Monday, August 17 at 9am, and the remaining tickets will be released Wednesday, August 19 at 12pm.

• Recycle a Bicycle has moved and officially opened in their new space at 450 Grand Ave. Their program refurbishes donated bikes and sells them at affordable prices, while also supporting bike education, job training, and other programs for NYC youth and adults. So basically, it’s a great place to find a used bike or get yours fixed while supporting a good cause. Their previous location has been replaced with Buddy’s Dispensary.

Soften into Self: A guided somatic workshop at Dear Friends Books designed to help you slow down, reconnect with your body, and tune into your inner world through breath, gentle movement, and somatic inquiry. • The Bed-Stuy Block Association is looking for volunteers for their block party on August 9th. They have a variety of shifts and activities like event set up, artist assistance and social media coverage available to sign up for. You can sign up on using this form. They’re also currently fundraising for their new (and first) community large-scale mural on the corner of Jefferson Ave. and Tompkins Ave. if you would like to support the community in other ways!

• Maya Congee Cafe, has launched a new evening concept, Maya – A House of Rice, at their Clinton Hill location. This new dinner service took over a year to execute and is aimed to celebrate the flavors of Chinese cuisine. Owner Layla Chen notes that the “menu is approachable for all types of people and all types of occasions”. You can read more about it on Hell Gate.

• The historic Jacob Riis Bathhouse will reopen on August 7 as the Rockaway Ocean Club. The $88 million redevelopment combines public amenities with a members-only club. The opening will be in two parts with the first including a café, bar, pool, and limited programming, while the hotel, restaurants, and full retail offerings are expected to debut in 2027. Memberships are already available although about 60% of the building will remain public. You can find out more info on their site.

Tell us about yourself (the many things you do outside of Clinton & Greene, fun facts or thoughts you’d like to share with the community!)
I am originally from Australia but have been living here for over a decade. I like hot yoga, spending time by the water, and constantly rotating through crafty hobbies (my real hobby is shopping for hobbies). I’m a self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur, avid Citi Biker, and volunteer at @flatbushcats. I work a 9-to-5 in consumer trends and forecasting, and I happen to have the world’s cutest little cat (Junie), which is a completely unbiased take ;)

When did you move to the neighborhood and how did you decide to live here?
I ended up in Clinton Hill on a whim. I came for a summer sublet with every intention of leaving afterwards, but here I am four years later.

What are some of the things you love about the neighborhood?
I love how much people love living here. I have yet to meet someone who feels indifferent about this neighborhood. I also love how scenic it is – I’m constantly pulling out my phone to take a photo of a vine-covered brownstone, the trees changing with the seasons, or the streets packed with people (and DJs) on Halloween.

Local Happenings and New Openings

• One of the most frequent questions in our DMs is: What’s replacing Dosa Royale? The answer is Iberico, a new Spanish wine bar taking over on DeKalb Ave., first reported by SWURL Media. The project comes from Tamy Rofe and Colonia Verde partner Viridiana Escamilla, with chef Felipe Donnelly creating a menu of classic Spanish tapas alongside wines from across the Iberian Peninsula.

• Natural wine bar, Well Nice, is coming to Bed-Stuy this fall, opening at 1038 Bedford Ave. Founded by husband-and-wife sommeliers Zoe and Joe, the self-built concept is returning to Brooklyn after a stint in the Hudson Valley. The pair met while working at a Manhattan wine bar and have spent years combined in the hospitality and wine industries before launching Well Nice together. They are currently raising funds through Kickstarter to support their move.

  

• Evelina has confirmed with us that their beloved gelato cart will be taking over the former Sushi D space across the street. The team is excited to transform the seasonal stand into a year-round spot with additional flavors, though they have yet to announce an opening date.

  

• Perspire Sauna Studio is planning to open this October in Downtown Brooklyn. The studio will offer private infrared sauna suites, red light therapy, contrast therapy with its proprietary SNØ Showers, and halotherapy (salt therapy), giving you another place to sweat and recharge.

• For the pop culture fans, here’s your neighborhood celebrity sighting of the week: Deuxmoi first reported that Olivia Rodrigo was spotted in Clinton Hill with a mystery man. We won’t out the location I quickly recognized but I will say “Clinton Hill man” does have a pretty great ring to it.

• Thinking of opening a neighborhood business, or know someone who is? NYC has unveiled more than 50 proposed reforms designed to make the process less bureaucratic, from cutting outdated permits to assigning dedicated case managers for new business owners. The package also streamlines requirements for barbershops, childcare providers, restaurants, and more, with the goal of making it easier to get businesses up and running.

• After Do or Dive’s iconic awning fell in mid-May, the beloved spot has finally replaced it with a new version that’s a close replica of the original. The awning was saved from the previous owners, so the replacement brings back a familiar piece of the neighborhood staple’s look.

The World Cup may be over, but thankfully there’s no shortage of things to look forward to around the neighborhood!

• Saison, a bakery founded by Vogue alum and Brooklyn native Sammy Rees, is opening its first brick-and-mortar bakery at 434 Hancock Street in Bed-Stuy! After five years of baking out of her apartment, Sammy is bringing her handmade cakes, classic bakes, and gluten-free treats to the new space, with everything housemade down to the jams and fillings. Designed to be welcoming and reflect Sammy’s romantic, nature-inspired aesthetic, the bakery will be open Thursday through Sunday during July and August from 8:30am until sold out, with savory pastries and sandwiches coming after Labor Day.

  

• Notes to Neighbors is bringing its community pen-pal project to Yours Truly, Brooklyn, matching neighbors for a months-long letter exchange designed to spark connection in a slower, more thoughtful way. Participants will drop off and receive one letter every two weeks from July through December, then meet their pen pal and fellow neighbors IRL at the end of the program. Sign up here!

• Last week, developers unveiled plans to transform the former Macy's building on Fulton St. into BKX, a 440K sq. ft. entertainment, dining, and retail destination. Instead of a traditional shopping center, the 5-story space is being designed around immersive experiences, flagship retailers, restaurants, wellness concepts, and cultural programming, all centered around a dramatic public atrium while preserving the building's historic architecture.

  

• If you love peeking at Clinton Hill real estate, this new StreetEasy listing on Washington Ave. is worth a scroll. Set inside a converted 1930 maritime workshop, the loft features 13-foot ceilings, exposed timber beams, massive factory windows, an original skylight, and a custom kitchen centered around a brass- and crema marble-clad peninsula. With just four residences in the building, it’s a reminder of how many hidden industrial gems are tucked throughout the neighborhood.

Local Happenings and New Openings

• BK MAG named Welcome Home one of the “Best New Bakeries in Brooklyn Right Now” and we couldn't agree more. Opened at the end of 2024 by Isa Steyer and Billy Wright, the neighborhood bakery has quickly become a favorite for its laminated pastries, loaves of bread and warm atmosphere. They're recently back from their summer break, so stop by to show the team some love. And if you need a recommendation, start with the cinnamon rolls we've been raving about in our recent feature.

  

• Bar Camillo in Bed-Stuy is saying goodbye, with its final day of service set for July 12. The team is turning its focus to Locanda and Camillo, where they’ll be introducing new dishes, hosting events, and serving gelato year-round.

• BAM is opening its Peter Jay Sharp lobby as an official NYC Cooling Center this summer, offering a free, air-conditioned space to cool off, recharge, or simply take a break. Stop by Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 30 Lafayette Ave., where restrooms and water bottle filling stations are also available.

• A sweet treat with an even sweeter mission: Candor Candy donated $750 to CHiPS in June and is continuing to support local food banks through its "Candy Can Do Good" initiative. House of Wonder Pop-up (10am–5pm): LOMA Collective is popping up for a day of play, coffee, and shopping, with colorful everyday basics for little ones on hand. Stop by to browse the mom-owned brand’s easy mix-and-match pieces designed for kids ages 0–6.

Yoga in Fort Greene Park (11 am): Bring your mat and water bottle for a free hour long yoga class on the Passive Lawn #1. This is one of many classes for the season hosted by Shala Teachers, rotating weekly.

Bi-Weekly Volunteer Days (10am–12pm): Join neighbors in Fort Greene Park for a volunteer day focused on seasonal maintenance projects like mulching, weeding, trail clean-up, and clearing pathways. Local groups are welcome, and RSVP is required to participate.

Live! From Tadpole (8pm–1am): Skirttssounds and Monotonic Radio are taking over Tadpole, sister to Frog wine bar in Bed-Stuy. Local Happenings and New Openings

• Greenlight Bookstore's annual Find Waldo event is back, with Waldo hidden in local businesses throughout Fort Greene and Clinton Hill all month long. Pick up a passport from the bookstore, collect stamps as you find him, and see how many locations you can check off. You can find all of the participating stores on this map.

  

• After an electrical fire next door to Bar Birba, the team has launched a GoFundMe to help cover staff wages and other expenses while they work through the insurance process and prepare to reopen. If you would like to help support the staff and bridge the gap during the temporary closure, you can find the link here.

• A new shipment from Denmark just landed at Lanoba Designs, with fresh pieces making their first showing in-store. Stop by to browse the new collection during their showing from Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th, 12 to 4pm each day.

  

• Free Summer Meals are back starting June 29, offering free breakfast and lunch across New York City for anyone 18 and under. No sign-up, ID, or paperwork is required—just show up at participating schools, parks, libraries, and community centers to grab a meal. Here are some nearby locations where you can find them:

Saturday, July 4:

4th of July Day Party (2 – 9pm): Our very own Saint James Joy is heading down to Industry City for a family-friendly day party. It’s a free event with BBQ, food trucks, and of course DJ sets. The soccer games will also be screening for those that don’t want to miss out!

Cookout with Babydudes (12pm+): King Tai Bar is hosting a cookout with a great menu lined up from Babydudes. They’ll be going from noon and no RSVP is required.

✨ Local Happenings and New Openings ✨

• Latin American inspired bakery and cafe La Mestiza are opening right by the park in Fort Greene this fall. After mostly sharing their take on Ecuadorian flavors through pop-ups, the husband and wife duo is finally settling into their own place.

  

• The Fort Greene tennis courts are back open for the summer. After hosting their reopening party last weekend, the courts are once again buzzing with players of all ages. You can check out the events hosted by the Fort Greene Tennis Association in their 2026 calendar.

• Only Child, the highly anticipated new bar from the team behind Frog Bar, officially opens this Friday, June 26. The Bed-Stuy spot will welcome its first guests from 5 pm to 2 am, bringing a new late-night option to the area.

• Leon & Son have launched their largest wine auction yet, featuring curated bottles from around the wine world. The auction closes July 2, with bottles available for shipping or pickup at the Fulton Street store.

• The World Cup is in full swing, and we’ve rounded up some of the best spots in the neighborhood to catch the matches. Check out our guide for where to watch, and keep an eye on our Instagram Stories for additional watch parties and game-day specials throughout the tournament.

• Nordic inspired restaurant, Smør, is showing the World Cup games in their under-the-radar backyard, and have introduced the “Smør Pass” with drinks inspired by different countries, and once you collect 6 you get a prize! They have happy hour from 4–6pm every day (even weekends) with cocktails, beer, and snacks.

Back to the Block Party (9am–6pm): Father-son DJ duo Saint James Joy are hosting an all-day family-friendly event at their local church. Expect great music, food trucks, BBQ, and a bounce house for the whole family to enjoy. Stop by for a quick visit or stay a while as they’ll be going all day.

Famous Last Words Game. Set. Set List. (2–7pm): Famous Last Words is hosting 6 DJs for an afternoon of music, specialty drinks sponsored by Grey Goose (including the iconic Honey Deuce), raffles, and giveaways. Each DJ will be spinning 40-minute sets and 15% of all drink proceeds will go to Kings County Tennis League to bring tennis, education, and enrichment to the youth across Brooklyn.
